POKOTABI / Soyoya Edobata
そよや江戸端
Tucked along an alley in Edogawabashi, Soyoya Edobata serves vegetable-laden tonjiru set meals, Japanese-inspired cassata with dried persimmon and black beans, and organic teas in a restored house.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Stepping off the Jizo-dori shopping street into a side alley, visitors take off their shoes at the entrance and climb steep stairs into a tranquil tatami room preserving the feel of an old Japanese house. The centerpiece of dining at Soyoya Edobata is the tonjiru set meal served with colorful side dishes. Packed to the brim with vegetables and pork, the soup has a mellow, natural dashi sweetness that diners can customize using condiments, spicy miso, and fermented seasoning pastes. Accompaniments like rotating small plates, a seasoned egg, and pickles complement fresh-cooked rice.
Linger after your meal, and the cafe menu offers notable sweets, led by the signature Soyoya Cassata, a Japanese interpretation of the Italian iced cake. Blended with cream cheese and rich cream, it incorporates traditional ingredients such as sweet black soybeans, dried persimmon, and dried sweet potato, providing chewy texture and gentle sweetness in every bite. A limited-quantity hojicha pudding made by simmering organic roasted green tea leaves offers a firmer, bittersweet profile with fragrant roasted notes.
The drink menu focuses on Japanese teas, including organic black tea, regional sencha, and a chrysanthemum tea blend. Served in teapots with hot-water refills, they invite guests to settle in with a book or conversation over an unhurried afternoon. Between nourishing bowls of dashi soup and thoughtful Japanese confections, it is an inviting spot for a restorative pause.
